Home is where the heart is for our Sales Manager Russell Thompson

Sep 1, 2025

There’s no place like home for Russell Thompson. That’s why as Highland Walloon’s Sales Manager he likes nothing better than helping buyers find their place in this vibrant new community. And with close family ties to the region, it’s not just a job – it’s personal.

Russell’s connection to Walloon goes back more than 160 years. It began when his great-great-great-grandfather, James O’Shea, emigrated from Ireland and settled in Walloon in the mid-1800s, followed by his great-great-grandfather John O’Shea who was born in 1861, and then his great-grandmother Agnus Mary O’Shea in 1883.

Agnus later married Patrick Egan and gave birth to Russell’s grandmother Kathleen Mary Egan who married his grandfather John Thompson. John and Kathleen moved to Graceville, in Brisbane’s western suburbs, where they raised Russell’s father Col Thompson.

“Walloon is in my blood,” said Russell.

“There’s something really special about contributing to the future of a place that’s been part of my family for generations.” Raised in Brisbane’s southern suburbs and a former Ipswich Grammar School student, Russell now lives just 15 minutes away from Walloon in Woodend. With strong community ties and a lifetime of local knowledge, he brings not only experience, but a deep respect for the region’s heritage. No wonder he’s excited.

Highland Walloon offers buyers the best of both worlds – a relaxed, rural environment surrounded by rolling hills, country towns and pubs, with the convenience of being close to the city of Ipswich.

With larger than average blocks starting at 420sqm, its exceptional affordability appeals to both first home buyers and families alike.

“It still feels like the country here, but you’re not missing out on what a city has to offer,” Russell said.

“Plus, the blocks are big – much bigger than what you’ll find in most nearby developments.

“You can buy a 600sqm block here for the same price as a 300sqm block in Ripley, which is also 15 minutes from Ipswich. The difference is Ripley is very suburban now whereas at Highland you’ve got plenty of space and views across the Bremer Valley to the mountains of the Flinders Peak Group.”

Russell also brings a wealth of industry experience to the role, having clocked up 30 years selling and marketing contract homes, spec homes, and new home and land packaging on boutique and master planned communities in Brisbane, Ipswich and the western growth corridor.
It’s an impressive resume. But ultimately, everything comes back to family for Russell.

“The community means something to me.” he said.

“Walloon is close to my heart and it’s incredibly rewarding to be able to help others start a new chapter here – just like my ancestors did.”
